You know how it is: sometimes you want to watch a 12-part Scandi-noir about the bottomless darkness lurking in the human soul, and other times you need something a bit more, er… fun. Lately I’m finding the latter option much more appealing.
Christmas Number One is a musical comedy about Cristelle, a troubled star who finds herself stuck in Somerset after being unexpectedly fired from Chixx, her sassy all-female pop group. She may be trapped in a small village, but her ambition remains undimmed. With only a month until Christmas, she enlists her ex-boyfriend and some local musicians in a bid to record a new hit-single and beat Chixx to the coveted number-one spot.
Featuring a soundtrack full of all-original pop songs and inventive dance numbers, Christmas Number One is a heart-warming tale about a local community and one woman’s battle with her own ego.
We have shot and completed a 10-minute teaser to serve as proof of concept. This will be screened in Somerset, Bristol and London, and after that begins the big push to make the feature.
The teaser was produced by Camilla Stoppani, shot by DoP Steven Cameron Ferguson, and stars Hannah Howell and Amy Barnes, along with Clark Alexander and a host of actors from The Mendip Players and the Cheddar Stage Society. Music & lyrics were written by David Buchanan and the song was co-produced by Ed Seed of Dua Lipa and Stats. Everyone involved was an absolute treat to work with and I think that atmosphere has been captured in the film itself.
